Symbols

Symbols is an infinite composition of ever-changing music generated by computer code. There are no fixed notes or sounds. The code, like DNA, carries the genetic information of the piece, allowing it to evolve within prescribed boundaries.

Among the influencing factors are the earth's rotation and revolution. Therefore the piece, in the manner of organic life forms, follows the time of day and the passing of the seasons.

Symbols can never be experienced in its entirety, only fragmentarily. The whole remains out of reach. However the piece is recognizable, because its rules precisely define its contours. My intention was to write a piece of music to which one could return and always find something both novel and familiar.

The music contains a reference to its own infinity, in the form of a sound that seems to be forever falling. It can be heard throughout the piece, but is more likely to appear in an easily discernible form on winter nights.

The piece was first performed at 'T' Space on July 21st, 2018 and has been evolving since then at martinmaugeais.com/symbols - following US Eastern Standard Time. It has benefited from the generous support of the Steven Myron Holl Foundation and the Low Road Foundation.

Symbols est une composition infinie de musique en perpétuel changement, générée par du code informatique. Il n'y a ni notes ni sons fixes. Le code, comme l'ADN, porte l'information génétique de la pièce, lui permettant d'évoluer dans des limites prescrites.

Parmi les facteurs qui l'influencent figurent la rotation et la révolution de la Terre. Ainsi, à la manière des formes de vie organiques, la pièce suit le rythme du jour et le passage des saisons.

Symbols ne peut jamais être expérimentée dans son intégralité, seulement par fragments. L'ensemble reste hors de portée. Pourtant la pièce est reconnaissable, car ses règles en définissent précisément les contours. Mon intention était d'écrire une œuvre vers laquelle on pourrait revenir et toujours y trouver quelque chose à la fois nouveau et familier.

La musique contient une référence à sa propre infinité, sous la forme d'un son qui semble tomber indéfiniment. On peut l'entendre tout au long de la pièce, mais il apparaît plus facilement de manière discernable les nuits d'hiver.

La pièce a été présentée pour la première fois à 'T' Space le 21 juillet 2018, et évolue depuis sur martinmaugeais.com/symbols — selon l'heure de l'Est des États-Unis. Elle a bénéficié du généreux soutien de la Steven Myron Holl Foundation et de la Low Road Foundation.
